It is a wonderful image draped in purple with the truth hidden within.
As a tradition there are those who love it and those who hate it but at least it has an effectMairie https://www.blogger.com/profile/17663275897097146508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5578980753063154388.post-50394537458443978422011-04-14T15:13:13.754-07:002011-04-14T15:13:13.754-07:00@JGP,

I think this is the first time it has been done in over thirty years. It brings me back. My parish church is beautiful and pretty much the way it was 120 years ago, but we do not veil the crucifix and statues anymore. As a child, I remember feeling special when the holy objects were veiled, the Sisters explained the traditions to us skillfully and so we prayed the traditions. Your 4 reasons are true. Many of the protestant churches (from Calvin on - the "Prosperity" gospel, e.g.) deny the need for suffering as part of the human condition, even for those who are being saved. Many private homes owned by Catholics also display at least one crucifix on a wall.
Jesus says that we disciples are to take up our crosses and follow Him. However, one reason that I don't think it should be done in the modern parishes is that now is the one time of year that we actually have a decent sized crucifix. The rest of the year (starting on Easter) we have this "risen Christ" superimposed on a cross, with the only crucifix being the dinky little "processional" model that can barely be seen from the front pew.

CHCAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
