I would like to add to that comment. John Paul II has something great to tell us about what the aim or preaching should be. In Redmptoris Missio 46 he writes:-

"46. The proclamation of the Word of God has Christian conversion as its aim: a complete and sincere adherence to Christ and his Gospel through faith. Conversion is a gift of God, a work of the Blessed Trinity. It is the Spirit who opens people's hearts so that they can believe in Christ and "confess him'' (cf. 1 Cor 12:3); of those who draw near to him through faith Jesus says: "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him" (Jn 6:44)."FrPaulUhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18297553609008032336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5578980753063154388.post-68946296445321464052012-08-16T02:26:16.572-07:002012-08-16T02:26:16.572-07:00Thank you for your blog.Reading it was an importan...Thank you for your blog.Reading it was an important reminder for me both about the need for prayer and study as I prepare to preach and also about always keeping in mind the most important aims of preaching.

Maybe I myself would list these aims as moving people:-

to repentance and faith in Christ
to love God,
to love others (especially the poor),
to grow as disciples of Jesus,
to be holy,
to understand what it means to live lives of holiness in the world and then to live such holy lives
to pray
to evangelise
and
to help others do all the above.

If people are moved in this way then the final end of "supreme love of God and the eternal salvation of souls" will certainly be met.

This is NOT in anyway to disagree about the need for preaching on Heaven, hell, death, and judgement.

Once again thank you.FrPaulUhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18297553609008032336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5578980753063154388.post-26367415783946509112012-06-22T08:41:00.840-07:002012-06-22T08:41:00.840-07:00@Mark,

Is it related to the ancient practice of ordaining on Saturdays during Embertide?Marco da Vinhahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06092410765851812842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5578980753063154388.post-9079655036608035792012-06-16T02:48:26.880-07:002012-06-16T02:48:26.880-07:00Fantastic post Father! The quality of preaching is real concern to some of us laity, who know that there is more to be had from preaching than endless moral exhortation, to 'live better lives' (as important as that is). It would be interesting to hear other people's experiences - I find it wearying having to listen to basically the same homily week after week.

Personally, I'd like our priests to teach us basic doctrines - Real Presence, Mortal & Venial sin, The Assumption...just to mix it up once in a while. I think a certain 'anti-intellectual' element has set in, and the intellectual needs of the less-well-educated aren't even catered for. These doctrines aren't beyond the grasp of anyone who didn't go to university. What do you think?Chattohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14488939389859451887noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5578980753063154388.post-7690217292704248982012-06-14T17:23:59.470-07:002012-06-14T17:23:59.470-07:00You are in my prayers each day, Father, as well as...You are in my prayers each day, Father, as well as many other priests I pray for by name.

As for Fr. One might almost think someone was trying to tell me something :-)

Great post, Father, on a topic whose importance can not be overstated. In Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange's words: 'After the sacraments there is nothing more divine, more sacred, than the word of God contained in Scripture and Tradition and which has to be preached to the faithful.'Paddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10112119118958158131noreply@blogger.com
